Sprint Earth Day Gig

Our band got to play a neat gig on Friday last week.  Sprint's world headquarters are here in Kansas City, they have several thousand people on campus.  Our pianist Charles is an executive there.  So they invited us to play their last day of Earth Day festivities.  There were dozens of vendors, and hundreds of employees (never got a count, but it seems like hundreds, maybe over 1000 folks shuffled through over 1.5 hours.

We played a pretty standard set, but we added a new song for this performance.  Note we have a new keyboardist, Tim. He's an excellent pianist and also has great music theory.  Charles and Anthony had done a nice arrangement of "This Is My Father's World" (We wanted to do this for Earth Day - kinda "stickin' it to the man" in an evangelical sense. . .).  Then Tim added a really neat (and very complex) bridge.  But it's a very cool, bouncy Dave Brubeck style waltz feel.  And an awesome song.  Here are some pics from the day:

Bitterness VS Cynicism

So my man Obama recently made comments in a San Francisco speech suggesting working class people are bitter about their economic circumstances and "cling to guns and religion" as a result.  There were other questionable comments regarding a general lack of patriotism in America made in the speech as well.

I am not going to defend the comments.  I still support Barack.  I don't think they were wise, and I also think that he and Hillary going at it has provided a significant lift to John McCain's candidacy.  And I could live with that (remember, I primarily support Obama because I think the Bush administration has done such a poor job that the Republicans don't have a prayer at the White House.  And I DON'T want Hillary as President).  I remain cynical about Republican politics and especially the Religious right and their/our rampant Pharasaism (did I just make up a word?).  And it's just this cynicism that I am addressing here.

In a great book, Balsamic Dreams, Joe Queenan comments at length on the cynicism and irony in which we late Baby Boomers, Gen X'rs and whatever the current generation revel.  I think Barack's comments fit right in there.  And I think the whole "liberal" vs "conservative" thing in the Evangelical church is a big part of that as well.  We thrive on it.  Just like the rest of society.  Snarkiness is largely the order of the day, cynicism, irony, and negativity are often the rule and this is so counter to the joy-filled life God calls us/me to. . . It's not productive.  Or healthy.  Or, more importantly, Christlike.

Yes, there are BIG, and I mean HUGE issues in the Evangelical church in how they/we are navel-gazing, looking up only to comment on the sad state of our fallen culture, meanwhile doing jack squat to effect positive change (injecting the Love of Jesus).  And lashing out at the liberals who constantly say how that has to happen, God help us/them.  Meanwhile the liberals are lashing out at Conservatives.  blah blah blah.

We're all such drama kings and queens.  And I'm guilty as charged.  I envision Jesus shaking His head at the whole ordeal with a sad smile on His face.  But still a smile.

This fallen world just creates such stress.  And that's pretty well outlined in Matthew 5-7, His first real address to the world.  Why can't I figure that out and be at peace and be more EFFECTIVE?

I don't know the point of this post.  Other than to say I see issues in my outlook, the outlook of those I agree with, and the outlook of those I don't agree with.  And I'm probably expending too much energy on all that. . .

ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK. . .

. . .GO KU!

OK, Saturday night was AWESOME-total domination and we gave Roy the bare-bottom spanking that will help us purge those demons from the great midwest.  And - giving Roy his due - he and UNC provided a nailbiting 2nd half for a bit.  But MAN, those 'Hawks were GREAT!

Tonight's the night, folks.  20 years later, our next NCAA Championship?!  I think we can hang with Memphis.  They are a very good team.  But we play a similar game and our bench depth will take us to the cutting of the nets!

c'mon, man, it's John Piper!

I love it when someone much, much smarter than me and much, much more respected than me (not that getting into either of  those categories is, um, difficult. . . ) and even more CONSERVATIVE than me supports a position I've tried to communicate.  OK, here it is my right-leaning friends who have hammered this position recently (and controversially) brought into the Evangelical discussion by some modern forward-thinking Christian writers (I refuse to designate them or even use the word "postmodern."  I also acknowledge the danger of taking too lightly the power and impact of sin).  John Piper his own bad self suggesting that we have no Biblical mandate to make a secular world act like a Christian world.  We have to understand that is where we are currently operating, and by sitting". . . evangelical ghettos, and they stick their heads out just long enough to yell at the rest of us and tell us what a mess we're making of everything"* we are doing more harm than good.  OK, he doesn't really go that far, but that's my conclusion. . .

Make clear that God is the foundation for our commitment to a pluralistic order--not because pluralism is his ultimate ideal, but because in a fallen world, legal coercion will not produce the kingdom of God.  Christians agree to make room for non-Christian faiths (including naturalistic and materialistic faiths), not because commitment to God's supremacy is unimportant, but because it must be voluntary or it is worthless.  We have a God-centered ground for making room for atheism.  "If my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight" (John 18:36, RSV).  The fact that God establishes his kingdom through the supernatural miracle of faith, not firearms, means that Christians in this age will not endorse coercive governments--Christian or secular.

John Piper
